It Started With The Love of a Great Pyrenees..

We wanted to share awareness about the "2 Million Dogs" cancer awareness effort, founded by Luke Robinson in honor of his late Great Pyrenees, Malcolm.  There are some events coming to the Denver area, so please mark your calendars.  There will probably be some great volunteer opportunities for those interested!

I have the good fortune to be able to say I have never had a pet suffer from cancer.. yet.  Inevitably, with my love for animals and my intention to have them forever, I will likely see it one day.  I struggle to even be on their website, as my empathy wells over and I end up shedding a tear or two.  The only thing that beats the sadness of a cancer diagnosis in our canine friends, is seeing the over-pouring of love from the human.  As a technician I see sick and dying dogs often, but my heart rests soundly at night because I am witness to the insurmountable level of love we are capable of giving our friends, no matter how long they are with us.  The beauty of that love, being so great and large, is enough for me to keep my chin up and continue to have the bravery to have pets in my life; for surely owning a dog is a great act of courage.

From their website, 2 Million Dogs

"It began with a promise to raise awareness of canine cancer one mile, one city, and one person at time. Luke Robinson with his two dogs walked 2000 miles from Austin to Boston to fulfill  he made to his dog Malcolm who died from this horrible disease. Visit www.2dogs2000miles.org for more information about their walk.  2 Million Dogs was formed on the belief that if 2 dogs can walk 2000 miles to bring awareness to cancer surely 2 million dogs can walk 2 miles. Our mission benefits the study of canine cancer and comparative oncology.  Sign up now for a 2 Million Dogs Puppy Up! Walk in your area… there will never be a better time like this to Puppy Up! against cancer.  A cancer-free world starts with one dog, each mile at a time.  The funds raised from these events will be used to fund canine cancer and comparative oncology research particularly focusing on the causal relationship between infections, immune response, and cancer. We are in the early stages of our process as we are currently looking for research partners and raising monies to fund the study."

WANTED: Venue for a "Yappy Hour" Event!

We are looking for a venue (an indoor agility course, doggie day-care, or the like) that would be willing to host a "Yappy Hour" event!  If you are not familiar with Denver's Yappy Hour Meet-Up group, click here to check it out here!  Regan Han, one of our CGPR adopters/alum, is the Yappy Hour Coordinator and has offered to help us set up a fundraising event to help Ken & Bri raise the rest of the money for the half marathon they will be running in memory of Dawn!

Last weekend, they were able to raise about $650 at the Chili Cook-off (which turned out to be a fabulously fun time!), but they still have quite a ways to go!

The fundraiser would be something like $10 for coffee, tea, hot cocoa + human cookies & doggie cookies + play/socialization time for your pup!  We are also toying with the idea of doing Santa/Christmas pictures at one of these events, which we have previously done at PetSmart, with all proceeds going to Ken & Bri's fundraising.  I am by no means a "professional" photographer, but I enjoy photography and would take the pictures with my dSLR and then email out the pictures so you can print whichever ones you want.  Nothing is official yet though.

Soooo.....If you take your pups to one of these types of places, or know of one in your area who might be interested in hosting an event, please email us and let us know!  We would GREATLY appreciate any leads!

Also we would love to know if you might be interested in attending an event like this!

YOU Can Do Something Great This Month!

DO YOU COOK CHILI?  OR, ARE YOU IN A BAND.. OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS????

So many people make amazing chili.. I think they just get shy.  Don't be!  I've been to a couple of chili cook-offs, and I can say.. we love ALL of the chili!  It's about getting out there to do something great for charity.  Please forward this information to anyone you know, with access to Denver, who loves chili and loves charity.  WHO DOESN'T???

In addition, we need bands to play at this event.  Again, don't be shy.  Just call Bri on the number below for more information. There will be cash prize to the band that brings the most attendance, and each band member receives an entry ticket for all-you-can-eat chili. Also, if the winner is approved by the owners, the band with the largest crowd may be offered the opportunity to play at the venue on a Friday night. What a great chance to gain exposure for new bands, or a great opportunity to have some fun for established local bands!!

In Memory of Dawn...

Many of you know that our founder and president, Dawn Meaney, passed away last year, but what you may not know that is on top of all of all the wonderful work she did for our Pyrs she suffered from Chron's disease for many years. Chron's and Colitis are two chronic and often debilitating digestive diseases that impact 1.4 million Americans; people of all ages are diagnosed daily. No, their research efforts are not as well known as those for cancer research, but these are two very painful and often socially awkward conditions.

In an effort to honor Dawn, and for all who have been diagnosed with this disease, Ken and Brianna (Dawn's husband and daughter who many of you all know) will be running the Vegas 1/2 Marathon on December 4th with Team Challenge!  Team Challenge is the Chron's & Colitis Foundation of America's endurance training and fundraising program.

Ken and Brianna are trying to raise $6000 by the end of November.  No donation is too big or too small, and they are all 100% tax deductible!  Please also keep in mind that many corporations have matching programs and will match any donation you provide--it's an easy way to double your contribution!

A minimum of 75% of the monies raised stay in-state for local research.

If you are unable to make a donation, please let others know about Ken and Brianna's fundraising efforts by sharing their fundraising link:  http://www.active.com/donate/RM11TCVEGAS/DenverBKenMe

For more information on the cause or disease,

Thank you so much in advance for your consideration in supporting Ken and Brianna in their efforts to honor Dawn through this cause!
