This is a BEAUTIFUL, young, male Great Pyrenees in a New Mexico shelter with not much time left. He has the opportunity to come to a Colorado if we can find a Foster (or furever) home for him.

He is listed here as a Pyr Mix, but has double dew claws and looks Purebred. Gorgeous markings!

If you are interested in Fostering or adopting him, please let us know, so we can get him out of this scary place!  There is a rescue here in Colorado who is willing to take him if someone can step up to foster.  They are contacting the shelter to ask them to please not euthanize him, so they have time to find someone who can help save his life. Dawn's Completed Legacy: Mya Has Found Her Home

For anyone who has been following this blog, or who had worked with The Colorado Great Pyrenees Rescue before our doors were shut, Mya is no stranger.  When the Pyrenees Rescue was ended, we had several dogs to place, and found homes for most of them in relatively a short amount of time.  The last two, Sam and Mya, remained, struggling to find their forever homes.  They were "our last dogs".  Our last 2 dogs to see their way into forever homes, and enabling us to *truly* close the amazing chapter of Dawn's years saving Great Pyrenees with her rescue.  Sam, now "Jack", Mya's former "boyfriend", found his home first. Mya became the true last, and now she has found her place.

A nice man was hiking with his Great Pyrenees on the western slope.  He was at a convenience store, where he overheard some people commenting on his Pyr.  They more or less said, "Isn't that the same dog our neighbor has?"  The man began to converse with them, where it was revealed they felt those who owned Mya didn't care for her well at all.  This great person took it upon himself to visit the neighbors, where he offered to buy Mya from them.  They agreed, and he took her.  His goal was short-term, get this girl out of a loveless home.  He next needed to find Mya a true place, so he found Dawn.  Dawn took Mya into The Colorado Great Pyrenees Rescue.

Placing Mya was difficult.  She is an alpha gal, and no other dog is going to push her around!  Her deep bark and strength would reveal itself anytime another dog would antagonize her.  So sweet and loving with her humans, we cautiously approached her interaction with other dogs.  She wasn't a great candidate for adoption events, and sadly she had to sit a lot of them out if there would be a lot of dogs there.  Great with her human, if another alpha gave her guff, she gave it right back.  For potential adopters, seeing this huge, loud dog respond in such a manner didn't show Mya's true colors very well.

In the last days, she and Sam would love each other and play and play.  Mya just wasn't a fan of the big rescue thing;  she didn't really like having to worry about all the other dogs all of the time.  In a smaller environment, she flourished.  Mya was and will always be a show-stopper.  A true Great Pyrenees to the standard, she is majestic and smart.

Thank you, Big Dogs Huge Paws, and thank you to Mya's foster.  Having lost our momentum, BDHPs was gracious enough to welcome Mya into their temporary family to facilitate finding her new family.  It was hard holding "adoption events" with only two dogs left, and they took Sam and Mya under their wing in order to give them exposure and adopter credentialing. Choosing to move Sam and Mya to BDHPs was a very difficult choice for Ken, as he would no longer be on the front lines for them.  It was nice he found people he could trust.

Mya has met a lot of amazing people who helped her along her way.  From the nice young man who originally rescued her from a family that didn't want her, to Dawn who welcomed her into CGPR.  Ken, Dawn's husband, spent a ton of time, money, and love to care for Mya while the rest of us searched for her family.  Not being Ken, I still assume that the day he transferred Mya to her last foster was one of the hardest things he's ever had to do.  I thank him for his strength and courage. Big Dogs, Huge Paws came in and saw her that final length of her long journey all the way to Missouri.

My heart is warm tonight, and I feel like Dawn can finally rest.  If I could imagine a heaven, I see Dawn up there still working and working on finding homes for her Pyrs.  Like somehow her 'cloud' was still unorganized, papers everywhere, full of commentary about who was 'right' or 'wrong' for her dog.  I imagined her last dogs, when they felt discouraged, being visited by Dawn who would tell them to not worry.  I imagine Dawn in the car as Mya was driven to Missouri, kissing her face and saying her final goodbye, as the other Pyrs who left before Dawn urged her on with them, saying "It's time to go now, all your babies have found homes."

As pictured below, Mya was the last Great Pyrenees Dawn was ever photographed with.  In addition, the last photo to ever be taken of Dawn.  It seems now almost eerie that Mya would be the last one waiting.  Like somehow Dawn knew, and her deep embrace was filled with all the wishes and hopes she had for her.

This picture has long been burned into my heart.  It's the image I always think of when I look back on the rescue.  Thank you to everyone who helped this angelic, loving, beautiful angel.  Good luck, Mya.  We will never forget you, and we will never stop loving you.

Banner's Second Chance

Adopted!!

Abby found Banner early one morning during a thunderstorm. He was dirty, wet, scared, and limping. He just laid by her car looking for help. She took him to the vet where they took an x-ray that showed he had been shot in his left leg awhile back. The vet recommended he be put to sleep because his leg would have to be amputated.  They called animal patrol who took him and tried to locate his family. Abby called to check on him after a few days and they said they couldn't find his family, and he would be put to sleep that day. Abby talked to her vet and showing him the x-rays, and she decided to try and get him help. She contacted a local no kill shelter, who told her they already went to see him and wouldn't take him because of his leg. So Abby adopted him,  in hopes of finding him a great home. Banner went to her vet for a full check up and he told her that he was in great health, minus an ear infection that has since cleared up. The buck shot missed his joints and his leg was going to be fine.

• Banner is a 2 year old male Great Pyrenees.
• He currently is with Abby in Park City, Utah.
• He is up-to-date on his shots.
• He is *not* neutered.
• He's very calm, very sweet, and loves to cuddle his head on your lap. 
• He loves walks and being outside, but also loves being around people. 
• He gets along great with other dogs, I have yet to see him around cats, other animals or kids. 
• He does have some broken teeth that the vet said can either be fixed or left alone (as they don't seem to bother him). 
• I've actually never heard him bark, but sometimes he does cry when he wants to hangout with you or needs something. 
• He was weary to go in the car at first, and whens he's in there he's a little unstable, but now he loves it and is always trying to get in the car to go for a ride when we walk past it. 
• He tries to bite the leash when he doesn't want to go the same direction as you, but is good about stopping when you say NO. 
• He isn't totally housed trained, but is getting better at it. He rarely even pees on the porch and waits to be brought to the grass to go. 
• He does not know any commands, but is catching on to COME, NO, OK, and GOOD BOY. 
• He doesn't know to stay behind gates if you put them up, and will walk through them. 
• He is very smart and recently figured out how to open doors, even ones that you have to pull in, but is never troublesome when he gets out he just wants to hang out. 
• He really is one of the sweetest nicest dogs I have ever met, he has a very cute and funny personality and really just wants to be loved. I really hope he can find a great home with a family who loves him as much as he will love them.

Banner found a guardian angel the day he waited for Abby at her car.  He must have known she'd stand by his side and save his life.  Unfortunately, Abby is not able to provide his forever home.  It was never an option to keep this amazing boy, but she knew his life deserved to be saved.  Now we are trying to help Abby write the last chapter to this amazing story of rescue and love.

Snickers is a 10 and a half month old Great Pyrenees mix. I think she might have aussie in her to, based on her body and tail (I could be wrong).  Snickers and her boyfriend were turned into our shelter because daughter has allergies to them. Her boyfriend has been adopted, but she is having a hard time here. She is fine with anyone outside of her kennel, but is growling and barky in her kennel.Therefore she can not go up for adoption. She is very shy, sweet and submissive. She lacks confidence too. Snickers is house trained and she knows come, shake, down/off, and sit. She is good with dogs she will play with them when she comfortable, but she is also cautious and fearful of them at first. I did dog test her and that is what we found too. She is ok with cats, she will chase them and be friendly with them, but has never hurt one in the past. She lived with kids between the ages of 3 and 18 years and was cautious and friendly with them also. Snickers likes runs,  car rides, toys, digging, fetch, walks, and tug-o-war. She is described as active and playful.

Dexter is looking for a new home...could you be his new family?

While Dexter is a Husky he was actually adopted from us at CGPR in February of 2009 (formerly Zorro).  Sometimes Dawn just couldn't say no to a pup who needed to be saved even if they weren't a Pyr!

Dexter's current Dad has taken on new employment that is going to require him to travel and not be able to spend the time with Dexter that he needs or deserves.  His dad wants to find him the best home possible and we, too, want to make sure that happens.

Dexter is between 5 - 6 years old, and a real sweetie.  It does take him some time to warm up to people, but once he does, he is just wonderful.   He is very good inside the house--doesn't chew on anything, no barking, and never any accidents.  He has been around a 2 year old little boy and is great with kids, letting them climb all over him.  

He gets along great with most dogs, but probably shouldn't be in a home with another Alpha male (usually it's more vocal, but sometimes there is an issue). Dexter likes his bones and doesn't necessarily love to share them.  He has not been around cats, so we don't know how he gets along with them.

Like most Huskies, Dexter will need someone who is willing to give him the exercise he needs.  His current dad takes him hiking and camping and he does really well with that (even off leash).

Dexter is neutered and UTD on all shots and vaccinations.

UPDATE:  Feller got adopted!  He is moving in with a family who is taking him to Nebraska to play on their farm!  Hooray, Feller!

This beautiful boy's name really is Feller!  He is a 1 1/2 year old Shepherd/Husky mix..  which is why he's so very handsome.  A CGPR adopter reached out to us about Feller, as her sister's father-in-law who owns him can no longer care for him.   His current dad got him at 8 weeks old, and knew the 'parents'.  A Vietnam Vet, he is dealing with ailing health and feels Feller needs a new family.   He is good with both kids and other dogs, and he is untested with cats.

He has jumped his dad's 3 ft fence several times so he would need a fenced yard of larger height, or someone willing to leash walk him.  He is housebroken and kind.  Feller didn't receive any training, so upon meeting him you may consider "puppy training" classes.    

Feller's ideal home is one where he has another dog to play with, or a lot of play offered by the family.  He is young, so still a puppy in a lot of ways, so needs a family willing to put puppy training time into him, of course minus house training. 

He is currently in Cannon City, and the current family will arrange transport for him down to the Denver area (or other close areas) for you to meet him.  He does need to find his new home right now, but no one is letting this Feller go to a shelter, so we'll make something work.  We may network him (are you interested?) into a foster home in the Denver area so he can meet more potential new families too.

Suzy (formerly Azar) and Bo have a new start to a happy ending -- Great Pyr Rescue of Montana is taking them, and they are on their way to MT after a few days with a foster in WY. EVERYONE who meets these two has fallen immediately in love -- from the transporter to the temp foster. While they are safe and sound with the rescue, they are still looking for their furever home!  Please contact Great Pyr Rescue of Montana!

Bo and Azar were adopted from the Steamboat Springs shelter earlier this year. The adopters have regretfully made the decision that they can no longer keep them due to an unexpected family hardship combined with the fact that the dogs have discovered how to jump the fence and resumed their old habit of chasing cars. They are willing to keep the dogs for a few weeks longer to search for a place for them to go, but if a rescue, foster, or new home is not found, they will need to surrender Bo and Azar to a local shelter.

These two gorgeous babies were rescued through an Anatolian Shepherd rescue, and someone was kind enough to share their story with us.  They looked at the pictures and recognized those amazing Pyr faces!  One theory is perhaps they are Pyr/Akbash mixes.  Below is a statement regarding these dogs from someone involved in their rescue!

"Here are the photos I took yesterday of these sweethearts. Will see if the shelter has any volunteers who could groom these two and try to take more pictures next week. I have a video that I will send separately as it was too large to include with the photos. The larger dog in the photos is Bo, the 5-yo male -- he had his tail tucked pretty much the whole time. The 3-yo female Azar has more color markings around her face/ears (gorgeous eyes) and her tail was up.

These are such loving dogs -- they are like Golden Retrievers on steroids! -- the sweet temperament in a larger package."

"Bo and Zara's owner said his wife turned them into pets and they didn't want to stay with the sheep so he was going to shoot them.  Thankfully, they contacted rescue first!

These two are very bonded and would do best if they could stay together.  Bo is 5, neutered, and current on shots.  He was hit by a car in the past and has some stiffness in one of his hips.  He can still more freely but you can tell it hurts.  Zara is 3, spayed, and current on shots.

Both are housebroken and walk on leash.  Both know basic commands, are friendly with people, have been raised with older kids, and are good with cats."

Meet Kenya!

Everyone, meet Kenya!  This sweet boy has had quite a rough time.  Kenya first came to CGPR last April (2010) and was very shy and fearful.  It seemed as though he had been through a lot, but we weren't sure what.  He went to a foster home who had him for 7 months; they told us that they planned to adopt him so we waited for their contract to come through.  They officially adopted Kenya in March of this year (2011) signing a contract stating that they would call us if anything ever came up where he needed to be returned.  Well, last night they dumped the poor guy at the shelter because he is too nervous in their home.  Ken went and picked him up this morning so that he wouldn't be euthanized.  As you all know, our rescue has been dissolved, so we are looking for a home for this sweet baby.

Kenya's Ideal Home:
Kenya would do best in a calm environment without children.  He needs someone that understands that something bad happened to him in his past (although we don't know what) and be willing to work with him on understanding that the world is a good place.  Kenya just wants someone to love him forever and not dump him at a shelter when he gets scared.  Kenya is about 3 years old and does well with both cats and dogs.

Our beautiful dogs, Sam and Mya, have been taken under wing by Big Dogs, Huge Paws.  Formerly the last 2 dogs available through The Colorado Great Pyrenees Rescue, BDHPs has welcomed them into their home in order to find them their forever homes.  With CGPR no longer a functioning rescue, and having lost the momentum to find these two angels homes, their adoption will now go through BDHPs.

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to everyone at Big Dogs, Huge Paws, for helping us plan a better future for Sam and Mya through their rescue.  With so many dogs out there who needs homes, it's no small thing for a rescue to take in more.  Everyone there was quick to reach out their resources and welcome these two kids in.  We feel blessed there was an organization in our area to help us in our final time of need.  Whoever adopts these two dogs will feel equally as blessed.

"A pretty awful gassing shelter in Nebraska has two Pyrs in their "dungeon" - which is a concrete room with no windows. These pyrs are not listed on petfinder.  A local rescuer saw them and emailed me. They need out NOW! I have gotten dogs from this shelter before - they gassed one I was working on actually even though they knew we were on our way to pick him up. So time is of the essence. Attached is the one photo of the male. There is a male and a female. They are friendly and good with other dogs.

Maddie Needs A New Home

Maddie was adopted in January of 2009 by a family that really loved her.  Over the past 3 years, one of Maddie's owners has been suffering from multiple sinus infections and within the last 6 months was tested and found to be extremely allergic to pet dander.

They replaced their fabric couches with all leather furniture, installed hardwood throughout their home, and installed an air filter into their heating/cooling system.  Maddie's owner is now facing surgery due to her allergies, and is forced to find a home for Maddie.  The doctor has recommended that for the surgery to be successful that all allergen causing agents be removed from the home (including sweet Maddie).

Maddie's current owners have tried to find a home for her with close friends and family they trust, but it seems that everyone has the maximum number of fur-babies they can manage.

Maddie is between 6 and 7 years old and is "the best, easiest puppy in the world."  She gets along with dogs, cats, and kids, and has never had an accident in the house!

7 Pyr/Border Collie Mix Pups + Moma Available for Adoption Through Animal Rescue of the Rockies

This sweet Pyr/Border Collie girl was found living in a flower bed in Kansas with her 7 puppies.  She is only ~1 1/2 years old herself, and her pups were born on September 1st.  Animal Rescue of the Rockies rescued them and brought them into a warm, loving foster home so that they can get the best care and attention until they are ready for adoption in November.
